Yes. You should be very careful around dark spaces under a bridge. There might well be a troll lurking there. They have been known to eat passers-by. Fortunatley they are easily tricked if you just keep your calm.  :)

I think that the concept has been spreed much through the old Norwegian folk tale of the Three Bill Goats Gruff.

We have folklore belief that vampires hide in old (and usually abanded) mill. The reason is that a vampire may help or be useful with domestic or craft work...if you only know how to ask a vampire for help. Also a person who dies on crossroad may become a vampire so you better watch out when you find yourself on crossroad during nighttime.

In a mill you could in Nordic folklore find a tomte.

For some reason vampires doesn't seem to have made it into the old Nordic folklore.

Some draugr can be somewhat similar to vampires, but more like ghouls I think.

we also have, the idea that you can get help from the "other people" if you know the right way to ask.

If tomte is like house protector creature, then Slavic people have domovoy/domovoi/domovik/domacin - spirit of the ancentor who protect the house. Like small hairly creature eho likes milk, bread and if he is pleased he would help people. In some slavic countries he has a wife - kikimora. :)
