The Draugen of Hrapp

Hrapp was a mean and controlling man in life and he wasn't planning on allowing death to change anything. On his death he was to be buried standing up in the middle of the courtyard of his homestead. This way he should still be able to watch over the running of the farmstead.

Hrapp often came back as a draugen (dead man) and he caused much harm. So his body was dug up and buried again at a place far away from places used by anyone.

Later however this ground was bought by a man named Olav Pa. Olav intended to raise cattle there. He had a cattle shed built and had a farmhand placed there to care for the cattle. Very soon however the farmhand came to Olav and wanted to have a different job.

- "Whenever I enter the cattle shed Hrapp attacks me and throws me out. I'm tired of wrestling with him."

So Olav took his spear and went to the cattle shed. As he entered the cattle shed Hrapp came against him. Olav tried to stab Hrapp with his spear, but Hrapp broke the shaft of the spear into pieces. Then Hrapp sank into the ground.

Olav dug up Hrapp's body. The corpse where still clutching the head of Olav's spear in one hand. Olav burnt the corpse and had the ashes spread for the wind far out at sea. The draugen of Hrapp has not been seen since then.
